1) The 2nd marking period was probably the one with the most work of my senior year. It was kind of what I expected and handled it as I could. I don't think I did the best job with keeping up with the invisible man work as far as the Bloom's notes but the rest I was able to keep up with. On both my symposiums I was able to contribute as much as I could with my second chance at the task. All the projects, papers, and blog post I did and on time which helped my understanding of the book. Invisible Man is very confusing to read, but with all the work and discussions we went over all help make the book easier to read.
2) I did well on my themes, symposiums, and IRP's. I did a lot better than the first marking period by keeping up with the papers and homework. I could have done and will try to improve on doing all my homework and making sure it is all correct and complete. I will also spend a lot more time on papers making sure I hit every category that is required. For the the third and fourth marking periods I will make sure if there is anything I am confused about I will get help from Mr. Gabriele or any student before having to turn it in late.
3) With lacrosse starting I am going to need to balance my school work and sports. I will need to make sure I don't slack behind in any classes and keep all my grades up. I hope to have a great second half of the year and make sure nothing like last year happens to me again.

IM Section VI
1) The most important thing of this section I feel is Brother Clifton's funeral. The narrator talks at the funeral which ends up starting a rally. The slogan of the rally, in which signs were held saying Brother Tod Clifton, Our Hope Shot Down. This is important because he was shot and killed by police for doing nothing but bumping into an officer. The speech the narrator gave caused much more problems then helped people grieve. He tells the people that soon Tod Clifton will be just bones in the ground. The only way they can get out of the dark box is by teaching the cops that they can't just kill people who get them angry, especially if they are another race.
2) I think the most intense part of the book is when Ras and the narrator get into it. Ras sends people to follow the narrator. He realizes that Ras is trying to attack the Brotherhood and thinks going after the narrator is the best choice. As the narrator is walking past the movie house the men that were following him grab him and start punching him. Luckily the doorman from the movie house was able to stop it before it got out of hand, but him getting followed and attacked I feel was the most intense of the section.
3) I think the most confusing thing in this section was Rinehart and how everyone he kept running into thought he was Rinehart. The lady, the people following him, and the cop all called him Rinehart but he had no clue what they were talking about. The narrator's name may be Rinehart and because he got lobotomized it may be who he is but he may not remember.

IR MP #2 Blog Assignment Relfection
1) I really liked this type of independent reading project. It didn't have me only stuck reading a book, I got to look up new stories in types of readings I probably wouldn't read much about had it not been an assignment. The old style of picking a book, reading it, and then a big project due at the end is too boring and doesn't let you explore what is new going on in this world. It was great and I would definitely would suggest future classes use this method rather than the old one.
2) I got to learn a lot especially from reading other people's blogs. I get to see what other people are interested in and also the views of people on certain topics. Since there were different categories for each blog post, I wasn't only reading something about sports. Had this not been a project, I don't think that I would explore as much into other topics as I did with this.
3) I would not change a thing except maybe add more areas that the kids can find articles for. It was a great idea to have us pick 1 from three different types mixing it up so I suggest keeping that the same. As for anything else there isn't anything that I would change.
4) As far as blog post, no. As far as reading more articles and other people's blogs, yes. I enjoy reading what other people write and getting to see different views on ideas. It was fun blogging but I do not think I want to keep doing it on my own. Had it not been something we had to do for school, I really don't think I would have started blogs.

IR Blog Post 4- careersandcollege.com
http://www.careersandcolleges.com/tp2/cnc/articles/view.do?cat=training-articles-and-advice&article=how-balance-academics-and-athletics
How To Balance Academics and Athletics
1) Many athletes get out of school with only one thing in mind, getting ready for practice while knowing they have a big essay due the next day. Lots of these stars end up messing up or screwing around during practice because they have other things stuck on their mind. What ends up happening is that by the time the practice is over the kids are so tired they just want to go home and sleep but are forced to stay up to finish any work that is due the next night. Kids will stay up as late as they need to finish the work and end up only getting a few hours of sleep.
2) Studies have shown that performance decreases due to lack of sleep. Many student athletes get caught up in this lack of sleep because after being exhausted from a practice or game have to go home and finish a 4 page paper due the next day. They should do the work before but a lot have important things to focus on aside from school work that could help set up their future, knocking sleeping out of the list of important things. Those kids have shown lower grades, test scores, and showing up to class late. They are either sleeping during class or have their minds wandering, either way it is not healthy physically and mentally.
3) In some cases playing a sport has helped an athlete do better in school, while they are able to gain more energy to stay up later. This energy allows the student to be able to do their work and not stay up rediculous hours of the night. Also being an athlete helps kids have an incentive to want to do better in school knowing that what dictates them from playing is not only how they do on the field but also off. Many times there will be around 20-30 minutes until you have a practice or game and most of the time people don't know what to do. The best thing is to either do some work to knock time off later or even take a power nap which has helped shown better results in the past.
1) Can playing sports actually help you do better in school?
2) Should athletes be given a little help with teachers knowing they have a long practice or game?
http://studentactivism.net/2010/09/29/cutting-sports-to-balance-the-books/
This article is about how a school is dropping 4 athletic programs in order to help reduce the amount of time being spent on a field or in a gym rather then in a library. It will be able to get more money to help students have better programs and study areas to allow those late night assignments to be done with ease. Even though it is not fair to those students who's sport is being dropped, the record has shown they are the sports in the school with the lowest gpa's. By cutting programs or even players it allows them to focus on academics over athletics helping set their future up to look better.

Mass Birds/Fish deaths occur Regularly
1) This year's New Years Eve was unlike any other that we have experienced. A large amount of animals all mysteriously died on the exact day in different locations. Over 2 million fish were found dead in the Chesapeake Bay, 150 tons of red tilapia in Vietnam, and over 40,000 crabs were dead in Britian. Many people believe this "aflockalypse" is either environmental or biblical. Biologists that were asked about the topic stated that mass deaths of animals occur a lot and are typically just brushed over when brought up. No one knows exactly what caused the deaths but people all over are desperately trying to find the facts.
2) Since 1970, things like this have been seen from disease, poison, or unknown causes, cases have always been around. In the last eight months, there has been a recorded 95 mass animal deaths that have occured in America. These include 900 turkey vultures that died in the Florida Keys, 4,300 ducks that were killed by parasites in Minnesota, 1,500 salamanders that died from a virus in Idaho, and 2,000 bats that died from rabies in Texas. Depending on how severe and even what kind of animal, many cases are not reported as many show no concern for the matter.
3) Many blame the weather, others blame the sky for becoming deadly and unleashing something that cause the sudden death of over 1,000 birds. No one is sure but more and more test in the area are being taken to find out what happened and also prevent something else like this from occuring again. As many scientists have seen, many of the deaths are from animals that have a large population, but lots bring up the point that there is an even bigger mass death going on and its all the humans fault.
1) Will the scientists and people ever know what really caused the deaths?
2) Is there some possible connection to what occured on New Year's Eve?
http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/7783602-government-is-seeking-for-the-truth-behind-the-mysterios-mass-bird-death-in-arkansas
The article is about how the government is trying hard to figure out what caused the sudden death of thousands of animals around the world. A lot of local citizens feel that it might be due to weapons testing from the military and that they may be in harm's way. The problem with what happened is that they happened around the world not only in the United States, so the government can't spend as much time trying to solve the mystery, especially with the House being changed and both parties are taking different views on the situation. All that can be done now is to wait for the truth and hopefully nothing of this scale happens any time soon.

Andrew Luck turns down more money than you'll ever see to stay in school
1) Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck turned down a large amount of money to attend school for his senior year. Luck was predicted to be the first pick of the 2011NFL draft, with a contract of $60 million dollars waiting for him just to say yes. Even though he is predicted to be the top pick of the 2012 draft, when he will eligible, the amount of money is will be losing is greatly. By next year about $40 million of the $60 million offered will disappear. NFL quarterbacks are some of the highest paid players in the league and even though next year he probably will not go low in the draft, the chances of him getting injured during his senior year are higher.
2) In the past, many players have done really well their junior year and are eligible for the draft and large sums of money. Many turn these offers down to return for one more year to finish up schooling at Stanford. The team last year did not do as well as expected and him taking the NFL deal would be best for him. This would not only give him a better chance to do better in the NFL, but will help him make more money in the future. Now with the NFL putting in a rookie salary cap, he will not make anywhere near what he could be making had he chose the NFL over Senior Year. Luck could come his way and Stanford might be able to win a national championship, but those chances are far from happening with the team only able to make it to the Orange Bowl.
3) Choices like this have very big impact on players that many fans do not see. Now not only are the expectations for him to be dominate high, but the performance of the team and the pressure the next year senior quarterback will face may get to him. Last year, Sam Bradford played his senior year after getting offered to play in the NFL in 2010. At the beginning of the season he injured his shoulder and his team got knocked out of the chance to win the national championship. He was lucky to be able to recover and ended up being the number one pick for the St.Louis Rams in the 2010 draft. Hopefully Luck is lucky and does very well his senior year.
1) Do you think that Luck turning down the chance to play in the NFL will hurt him for next year?
2) How do you think Luck is going to respond to the pressure from the fan's expectations for him?
http://usc.ocregister.com/2011/01/06/stanford-qb-andrew-luck-will-return-for-junior-season/58350/
The article is about how Luck feels getting his degree is more important than the big bucks. He is finishing up studying architectural design and is hoping that after the NFL he can use his degree to find a good job. Many players don't think about that when given the choice and immediately think about the huge amount of money that is being offered. Since I have never been in a position where I had to decide between getting $60 million a year to play a sport I love or finish getting my degree. Luck made his decision and now all people can do is wait and see what happens at the start of the college football season.
